Bill Withers - Use Me (Jackson Breit and Carneyval Remix)

The 70's has never sounded so fresh.  A collaboration between Jackson Breit and Carneyval, the two artists have redone Bill Withers' funky and soulful disco classic Use Me. It was dropped on Soundcloud a while back, but I just stumbled across it while doing the writeup and background for the remix of Kendrick Lamar that I posted earlier in the week.

This revision of the original maintains much of the original instrumentation and even some of Bill Withers' vocals through sampling, but the overall feel is very much modernized, along with the addition of Jackson Breit's own vocals and original lyrics.  Have a listen for yourself, and then hit the shopping cart in the player below to download your free copy of this awesome revision of a classic.

Jack J - Thirstin' [Future Times]

Vancouver's Jack J has brought some serious summer disco vibes for his upcoming release on Future Times. Thirstin' features great piano in a number of forms throughout, with plenty of variance and fills to keep you on your toes. The simple vocal, though short, fits perfectly into the rest of the groove. The breakdown and build up that comes just past the three minute mark takes the track on a whole other tangent while still holding onto elements of the first half.  As if all of that wasn't enough, this track just doesn't give up - even at 6:25, the bass lick comes right back in for the fade out leaving you wanting that groove to just keep rolling on.

It looks like this will be out as a vinyl only release, so if you don't have a turntable at home, I would imagine you're no longer reading this since you ran out the door to buy one... The rest of you can pre-order here. I've already got my copy reserved.

Also, I have to give a shout to Harry Wolfman for sharing this on his Facebook page, or I don't know if I would have found it.

Plus the label logo has 3 dolphins having a great time. How can you not get behind a joyous dolphin threesome? That's what I thought.

Julio Bashmore - Holding On ft. Sam Dew

"I'm holding on, I'm holding on for love." The newest track revealed by Julio Bashmore for his upcoming debut album Knockin' Boots is one for the idealists out there who are waiting for what feels just right. Holding On features the vocals of Sam Dew, and is a really funky piece of house music. This is some feel good and let go dance music.

Although this is Julio Bashmore's debut album, if you haven't heard of him by this point already, we have no idea where you've been for the past number of years, but it certainly wasn't following international house music. If you need a refresher, try Au Seve on for size. Now that you've become reacquainted, check out the other tracks that will appear on Knockin' Boots that have already been put up on Julio Bashmore's Soundcloud Page - Simple Love, Rhythm of Auld (both featuring J'Danna), and Kong (which features Bixby). The sampling already up gives a pretty solid feel for the vibe the rest of the 12-track album might have - which seems to be a great mixture of funky disco and classic house.

The full album will be dropping on July 10th on Bashmore's own label, Broadwalk Records.  Until it drops, we'll be rocking the streams of these 4 tracks.

The Kount - Kount Edition 2

Toronto based producer The Kount has just uploaded Kount Edition 2, an EP of 4 edits. This is some really funky stuff on here, with an experimental blend of disco, hip hop, soul and electronica. My favourite from this EP would have to be The Kount's edit of FKJ's Lying Together with its laid back vibe and late onset synths. These elements paired with the percussion and tight vocal chops give it both a laid back and tight feel at the same time. But really, it's hard to find fault with any of the tracks on the EP - all 4 are thoroughly enjoyable.

The Kount has also gone through and made a bunch of his older work available as name your price/free, so browse through the albums on his Bandcamp page and pick up what sounds good to you!

Dallas Cotton - Sometime ft. Brasstracks

Dallas Cotton, the artist formerly known as Yung Bae (there has to be a joke in there somewhere... or at least a Prince reference...) has just put out a new collaboration with Brasstracks -  a really energetic disco track chock full of brass goodness. This one took me surprise, partially because I didn't recognize the artist name, and I wasn't expecting the progression from the intro into the full energy that drops just 30 seconds in. Have a listen to this one for yourself and grab the free download through the shopping cart in the player below.

Harrison X The Kount - Falling In Love (Edit)

We take a step back to 1983 today, as Surface's Falling In Love recently had the edit treatment by two Torontonian producers, Harrison and The Kount.  This is a great little funky disco edit. A perfect Mellow Monday track to get you back into the swing of things - that disco vibe is strong and uplifting throughout.

The Falling In Love edit was also released as a free download, so you can grab it right from the embedded player below.  To add a little disco flavour to your music collection, just hit the down arrow in the top right corner.

Flamingosis - Kahunastyle [Keats Collective]

We posted one of the tracks from this album, Midnight in Montreal (embedded below) in our Friday Care Package on February 6th. The whole Flamingosis album has now been released and is available free from Keats Collective at their Bandcamp page here. Kahunastyle (a reference to a childhood nickname) brings together hip hop, funk, disco and electronic styles into one body of work, and the end result is great. Flamingosis brings in several collaborators in on this, including Yung Bae on Groovin', A Sol Mechanic on Future Lounge, and Go Yama on Cup of Ramen.

The whole album is full of great tracks, all in easily digestible tracks around 3 minutes long. The short length of the tracks need not suggest that there is a lack of substance here, as that is far from the case.

If you're a fan of hip hop, funk, or just enjoyable music in general, make sure to grab this album now right here.

MORRT - All I Want

MORRT is an English producer that I have been watching for a while, and has put out some great music both free and paid. This is a great little disco-y house track, which isn't a huge surprise for a style given the vocal sample in his contribution to the Fat! Records compilation Fat! Tracks Vol. 1 1979 "In the beginning before house, before acid, techno, before all of that, we had disco". MORRT has obviously decided to bring back the disco vibe on his latest work All I Want, which is also available from his Soundcloud page as a free download.  If any doubt remains that MORRT is bringing the disco back, you may also want to check out his latest mix for Fat! Records right here - some great house and disco vibes.

Make sure to explore his Soundcloud here, which has several great tracks, as I said, both free and paid. Some of these have definitely made it into my DJ sets, but I can't do ALL the digital crate digging for you! In any case, check out his latest work, and pick up this disco house track for free by clicking the shopping cart icon on the player below.
